Central Community House Clean Up Day

Central Community House will be hosting a Neighborhood Cleanup Day on June 14 from 10:00 am-11:00am at 1150 E. Main St., Columbus. Volunteers needed for trash pickup, raking leaves, possibly planting flowers, and cutting grass.

OCCN on the move

On April 1, OCCN will begin operations in its new
offices at the St. John Learning Center, 640 S. Ohio Ave, on the east side of Columbus.

This concludes our stay at the State Library of Ohio after seven years. OCCN would like to thank the Library for hosting us.

The St. John Learning Center is an organization dedicated to increasing literacy, computer skills, and GED preparation, as well as a member of OCCN.

OCCN will keep the same mailing address at the State Library, but the phone number will be posted on our website at a later date.

Recent News

We've had a flurry of activity in the recent months regarding network technology in Ohio. Below are some of the OCCN-related events that took place, in an effort to connect everyone to vital educational technological resources.

Tech Mix Conference Held in Ohio

The Ohio Community of Development Corporations hosted the Tech Mix Conference at the Crowne Plaza North Hotel in Columbus, OH. Representatives from non-profit organizations around Ohio attended the morning and afternoon workshops, held on November 28. 20 presenters facilitated lively discussions on the state of Ohio’s community technology.

Ohio Broadband Moves Forward

Expanding Internet access throughout Ohio is becoming more of a reality than a possibility.

On July 27, Governor Ted Strickland’s chief information officer, Steve Edmonson, announced that the governor had signed Executive Order 2007 - 24S, creating an Ohio Broadband Council and Broadband Ohio Network. On hand to witness the announcement were more than fifty technology activists. They came from Coshocton, Mansfield, Dayton, Cleveland, Steubenville, Toledo, Cambridge, Cincinnati, and a dozen other communities represented at the State Library for ONE Ohio’s second statewide gathering.

YouthBuild Wins Grant

Opportunities await those who are in the most need.

YouthBuild, an educational and job training program, was recently awarded $1.3 million, thanks to a grant from the Zanesville Metropolitan Housing Authority. The award includes $500,081 for the first year and an additional $401,177 based on congressional approval.

Upcoming Trainings on Web Development

In the future OCCN is planning on doing trainings on how to build and maintain a website utilizing open-source software. We also have the ability to host these sites utilizing the great free hosting offered by

Media Bridges Marketing and Development Coordinator

Media Bridges Cincinnati aims to offer free media educational opportunities and equipment rental. We offer training tools such as Final Cut Pro, I-Movie, Dreamweaver, Digital Photography, Photoshop, Internet Radio, Studio, Portable Production, and an array of MAsters CLasses that are all free of charge. Once certified, which only takes about a month, producers are encouraged to work alongside peers to develop new programs/shows to broadcast on community access television.
